“I f I have a disability, I have the right to special care and education”
Unicef Rights Respecting Schools Article 23
At our Newlands, we are proud to support Article 23 of the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools framework, which states that children with disabilities have the right to special care and support to live full and independent lives. Every day, we ensure that all our pupils have meaningful learning experiences tailored to their needs.
Juniper Class is a wonderful example of how we make learning accessible and engaging. The children take part in a range of activities that support their communication, sensory, and physical development. Through hands-on learning, they grow in confidence and independence.
Our partnership with City in the Community provides exciting football sessions, where children develop their coordination, teamwork, and social skills in a fun and supportive environment. Outdoor learning is also a key part of our curriculum—our children thrive in outdoor play, where they explore nature, build friendships, and develop their physical abilities in a sensory-rich setting.
Recently, we celebrated World Book Day, making stories come to life in a way that was accessible for every child. Sensory storytelling, interactive books, and dress-up activities allowed our pupils to engage with stories in a way that suited their individual needs.
By providing these opportunities, we ensure that every child, regardless of ability, has access to exciting and meaningful learning experiences—just as Article 23 champions.
Phonics fun and World Book Day!
March 2025
In Juniper Class, we have been exploring different environmental sounds. We have been listening to different sound buttons and then finding the correct animal.
We had a great day celebrating World Book Day! We read some of our favourite stories and then designed costumes and book marks. The children also enjoyed dressing up in different costumes.

“I have a right to relax and play
Unicef Rights Respecting Schools Article 31
In Juniper class we make lots of time to relax and play. This helps the children get to know their bodies better, what they like and don’t like and how to self-regulate. We encourage the children to not only engage in activities that support their sensory needs but also help teach them how to wait, take turns and play alongside each other.
We are always encouraging the children to develop their play skills so that the children are able to play with resources with care and also to develop their likes and dislikes. This is also a great way to encourage their communication.
As part of our weekly routine in Juniper our children enjoy swimming, football with Eduardo, soft play, TAC PAC and daily sensory break sessions.
Food Technology
November 2024
In Food Technology our Juniper boys have been working hard at getting into the routines around safe preperation and cooking. They have been washing their hands, sitting at their work spaces and preparing different foods using different methods such as peeling, chopping and grating.
Juniper class have also been using different basic equipment during these sessions such as a whisk, blender, cutter and rolling pin.
They have all engaged really well in these sessions and even enjoyed tasting some of their makes!

In Juniper this half term our focus book is ‘Chickens to the rescue’
To support the learning in this, children have been exploring the different farm animals and the sounds they make.
We have also been naming the animals and talking about where they appear in the story.
