Our Learning
Summer Trip
July 2026
Oak Class Team are beyond proud of Oak Class and how they represented Newlands School on our whole-day Summer Term Trip to Z-Arts Centre and Mayfield Park. Our visit to Z-Arts Centre and their ‘Adventures in Wonderland’ interactive play space was tied into our learning this half-term in English where we have been learning the story of Alice in Wonderland and drama skills of what different emotions look like and how to use our whole bodies to tell a story. We were excited to be met by the White Rabbit who whisked us down the rabbit hole where we played croquet, pretended to be the Angry Queen of Hearts on her thrown, got lost in a card maze, visited the magical mushroom forest, attended the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and home, and enjoyed a very immersive and sensory game of chess. We made jam tarts in the Queen’s Kitchen and slid down the slide into the pool of tears.
After our visit to Wonderland we explored books and shared stories in the library. Adults were beyond proud of the respect and curiosity shown by Oak Class towards the books in the library.
Then we made our way to Mayfield Park where we were extremely confident to approach lots of different climbing and playground equipment! Oak Class played alongside and sometimes with members of the public, how they challenged themselves to climb a little bit higher or a little bit further, and how all of Oak Class were amazing ambassadors for Newlands School throughout the visit.
Well done Oak Class we are SO proud of you!
Maths
March 2026
We have been very impressed with the growing understanding of Patterns that has been demonstrated by Oak Class in Maths this half-term. Oak Class have demonstrated how they are able to copy some actions to movement patterns and remember movement patterns to songs. When working with lots of different patterns they have been able to find the same when asked and place on top of the same to demonstrate understanding of this. Oak Class have enjoyed working together with adults to explore and create patterns with different resources, loved making noisy musical patterns with the piano and feeling pattern rhythms through the trampoline, resonance board and yoga balls. Some of Oak Class are now able to complete and continue patterns and make simple repeated patterns of their own. Brilliant work, Oak Class!
Science
February 2026
This half-term our topic has been ‘Look Up!’. In Oak Class, our English, Humanities, Science and Art lessons have all focused on space and the planets in our solar system. We have been incredibly proud of Oak Class as they created space boots, helmets and passports ready for their journey into space, and explored different features of the Moon, Sun and planets through a range of hands-on activities. In Science we have used different ways to learn how the Earth orbits the Sun and how that gives us day and night. In English we have learned space poems and in Art we have experimented with mixed media, using colour and texture to represent different planets. Great work venturing off into space, Oak Class!
Minibus, Soft Play and Swimming
November 2025
Oak Class have settled into routines brilliantly across school and settings. We are really proud of the progress that everyone is making in their learning which will soon be being shared with you via your child's school report. We are delighted to this half-term be accessing our hydrotherapy pool every Friday where we are working on our individual Physical and Sensory Outcomes, Soft Play every Thursday as part of our Communication lessons, and the minibus every other Wednesday to apply what we are learning about in Science at the Museum of Science and Industry. Great work, Oak Class!
MCFC Sensory Room
October 2025
On Thursday morning a group of pupils from Maple and Oak Classes represented Newlands School wonderfully on a minibus visit to Manchester City Football Club’s Sensory Room with a view of the pitch. As you can see they did amazing; exploring the space and technology with curiosity and respect and following instructions from both school and Manchester City staff brilliantly. We are so proud of how you represent Newlands when you visit different places - well done all!
